Life is like riding a bicycle – in order to keep your balance, you must keep moving.

If you want to live a happy life, tie it to a goal, not to people or objects.

Try to become not a man of success, but try rather to become a man of value.

The best things in life are not the ones you can get for money.

To inquire after the meaning of life or object of one’s own existence or that of all creatures has always seemed to me absurd from an objective point of view. And yet everybody has certain ideals which determine the direction of his endeavors and his judgments. In this sense I have never looked upon ease and happiness as ends in themselves – this ethical basis I call the ideal of a pigsty.

The ideals which have guided my way, and time after time have given me the energy to face life, have been kindness, beauty, and truth.

Without the sense of kinship with men of like mind, without the occupation with the objective world, the eternally unattainable in the field of art and scientific endeavors, life would have seemed to me empty. The trite objects of human efforts – possessions, outward success, luxury – have always seemed to me contemptible.

I also believe that a simple and unassuming life is good for everybody, physically and mentally.

A friend is someone who knows the melody of your heart and plays it to you when you have forgotten it.

The true value of a human being is determined primarily by how he has attained liberation from the self.

A human being is a part of the whole, called by us the "Universe," a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest, a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.

Why is it that nobody understands me, yet everybody likes me?

A happy man is too satisfied with the present to dwell too much on the future.

I never think of the future. It comes soon enough.

There are two ways to live: you can live as if nothing is a miracle; you can live as if everything is a miracle.
